We cannot predict how fast or how slowly It takes a young seedling to grow, Or if the last bird to fly from the nest Will always be weak and be slow. Nor can we say when a flower should bloom, Or the color and shape it should be. We don’t put these limits on natural things. “They’ll grow in their time!” we agree. We patiently wait for the slow butterfly To emerge from its dark hiding place. We know that we cannot force babies to walk By entering them into a race. When children are teething, or talking, or walking We know they’ll be different from others. It’s also that way when learning to read. They’ll be different from sisters and brothers. Children need patience, not pressure and pain When learning to read in their youth. We cannot force learning with stress and with fear. We must always hold fast to this truth. We cannot predict how fast or how slowly It takes young readers to grow, Or if the last children to start on their way Will always be weak or be slow. So, if you’re a parent, or teacher, or aide And you’re helping some students to read, Just give them some time, some love, and your faith So that someday they, too, CAN succeed.
